Week 14/52: 4 life questions and 10 decision makers from Dave Tate

setting a good example quote

A few years ago, I was at a crossroads in life. I had dreams I wanted to follow, but I had come to the realization that if I stayed on this path, I would never reach those dreams. So something had to change.

I reached out to one of my longtime mentors, Dave Tate, CEO and founder of Elitefts.com, and the process that ensued was a rather life-changing one.

The email exchange went something like this….

List the things you love about your life right now.
List the things you don’t like about your life now.
List the things you can’t stand about you current situation and current point in your life.
That alone set me up to ponder exactly what I love and don’t love. It also set me up for the following questions…
What would you classify as your top 5 highest values?
Name 5 people who have had the greatest impact on your life and describe why? What did they say or do? This could be either positive or negative.
After providing some answers to those 2 questions, he went on to say….
I think the most important things with any major decision is…
1. Is it a decision worth making?
2. The more “value based” your decision the easier you will sleep.
3. Understanding there is no right or wrong answer.
4. Getting as close as you can to knowing the risks and benefits – internally (your view)
5. Knowing # 4 from an external view – other peoples view who have you BEST interests in mind.
6. Creating a plan of action.
7. Having a back up plan
8. Trusting your gut
9. Knowing what you REALLY want out of life.
10. Knowing what you DON’T want in life.

So, I challenge you this week to go through these questions for your OWN life. Talk them over with a close friend or spouse and see if you are on the path to doing what it is you really want to do.

The last year and a half has led to the most amazing opportunities for me and my family. Because of this process and really honing in on my dreams, I have been able to quit my job and provide for my family by doing what I love and still make money.  And it’s all out of passion.
